Chapter 15

Although Theodosius didn’t like the idea of relying on a bunch of people he didn’t know, he had to admit using the Fire First network to hide Ant while she translated the Red Scrolls was the best course of action.

After contacting Naomi through the app, they were put in touch with a woman named Grace. She gave them coordinates to a ranch in New Mexico near the northern border of Texas. It was going to be a long road trip, but with so many drivers to share the burden, it would go quickly. With the cab only able to fit two people, they’d have to take turns riding in the bed of the truck.

A quick trip to a nearby Walmart got them a blow-up mattress and bedding to make the truck’s bed more comfortable, and then they were on the road. King demanded to take the first shift driving, and Ant happily snuggled against him on the bench seat, leaving Sabina and Theodosius to settle on the bed in the back.

They were supposed to be resting, but Theodosius was too keyed up to sleep. The moment King put the truck in gear and pulled out of the parking lot, he pulled Sabina into his arms. Her laughter made his entire body thrum with happiness.

“I don’t remember you being so handsy,” she remarked, nestling in against him with a content sigh.

He kissed her neck. “I’d be more than handsy if I could. I hope we get our own room at the place in New Mexico.”

“I think we might get our own cabin,” Sabina assured him. “I haven’t been there, but I’ve heard others talk. Ada said it’s gorgeous. Lots of private land for us to shift and forage if we feel like it.”

Theodosius nodded against her. “That’ll be nice. I’m sure Ant is ready to shift into her cervid form for a while.”

Sabina made a soft, negative sound. “Ant doesn’t like shifting. I don’t know what happened, but I get the impression she had a hard time when she was young. Rangales aren’t known for being kind to anyone different, like Tavi with her pure white coat.”

“What’s different about Ant?”

“Her cervid form is small and doesn’t have antlers,” Sabina whispered, as if Ant might hear her in the bed of truck.

Sympathy welled up in Theodosius. “Poor thing. The other kids were probably cruel.”

“No doubt,” Sabina answered. “Looking back, I’m amazed at how much cruelty I ignored.”

A shaft of pain hit him hard. “Same. I should have done so much, for you and for Tavi. I saw the things they did to both of you and I never spoke up.”

“Eh, I could take it, but Tavi’s a gentle soul, like Ant. The everyday brutalities hit them harder.”

“No,” Theodosius argued, holding her tightly against him. “It wasn’t right the way they treated you, even if you’re bigger and tougher than Tavi and Ant. The Rangales shouldn’t be that way. They talk about tradition, but all of it is only an excuse to be horrible.
